Freedom
If we are supposed to be fighting to keep our way of life safe, will that really matter if the freedoms we have keep slipping away.
The Supreme Court is getting a chance to overturn its Miranda decision, which for decades has required police to inform those being questioned of their rights before interrogation.
The case now involves a man continually questioned after being shot by police. Under questioning, he admitted reaching for an officer's gun.
Let's assume the police were justified in shooting this man.
Is it really a good idea, however, to say that police can shoot a suspect and then not have to give him his rights because he might die?
The Justice Department is backing the challenge to Miranda, saying it wants more power to question terror suspects.
I believe that rights such as the Miranda warning are one of the main reasons I think this country is worth fighting for. This administration is endangering those freedoms right now.

My grandmother said it best: "Our greatest ally against the government becoming too powerful and taking away our civil liberties is the government itself. It's too inefficient to truly be a threat. The day our federal government becomes an efficient, connected, well-oiled machine is the day to start worrying."
I think of her saying that quite often these days...our Homeland Security talking about "uniting" all the varied federal agencies (and thier separate computer networks), our justice system filing FOC brief in this Miranda case, our president (blech) saying, in reference to military tribunals and holding "suspects" in Cuba without any sort of due process or following any Geneva convention articles concerning POW, that anything we did was justified because of 9-11.
I'm at least as patriotic as the next citizen: My dad was in the military and I grew up in a military town. I'm one of the few democrats I know who are in favor of big military spending (hey, walk softly. carry scary big stick that shoots big fire from fast birds in sky.) not that being in favor of a strong military has ANYTHING to do with patriotism, although sometimes the Republicans act like that's the case. I'm DAR and Colonial Dames and I know that you should say the pledge of allegiance by saying "one nation under god" in all one breath without stopping because there is NOT a comma between one nation and under god.
I think our government is getting a little scary these days, though. What's next? DNA tags?
