Re: Welcome to the Java-OS/2 list!
Alex:
Congratulations on your organizing flair. I have a few points of
discusion:
A.IBM is also supposed to be producing a library which emulates the effects
of most Win32 calls, leading to a potential "binary" port of the Win95
executables.
B.I agree that public onwership of the Java source is desirable. However,
I think this project will be difficult to bring to a "successful"
conclusion if IBM releases a clean room implementation of Java/2. You
have to admit that this represents an unusually aggressive stance on
IBM's part. I have been detered from launching a funded port of Java to
OS2 for these reasons.
C.If we do proceed, I personally suggest the use of CSet++ and a C++
implementation. Personal preference based on familiarity with the tools
involved - though your point on costs is well taken.
D.I would prefer to do a commercial version as IBM has done rather than a
port of Sun code for which we will beholden to Sun.
Never-the-less I am very keen to see an OS2 version of Java!
